Meet The Crew

Smith Mathews
Brewmaster & Managing Partner

A native to Statesboro, Georgia, Smith is a Founder and Brewmaster of Southbound Brewing Company. Smith earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from The Georgia Institute of Technology while working at Sweetwater Brewing Company throughout college. He started in the back of the house, working on the bottling line but later joined the events and marketing staff of Sweetwater's tap room.

After experiencing all facets of the brewing industry, Smith was accepted into the fall 2009 class of The Seibel Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois and Doemens Academy in Munich, Germany. After obtaining an International Diploma in Brewing Technology from the World Brewing Academy, Smith returned to Sweetwater as one of their brewers and simultaneously started working on his MBA. Smith was later hired on as the Head Brewer and first employee of a start-up brewery, moving his brewing career to Charleston, South Carolina.

Carly Wiggins
Marketing & Sales Director - Co-Founder

A native to Statesboro, Carly also attended college at The Georgia Institute of Technology. She received two degrees in Industrial Design and Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. Carly began working for Sweetwater Brewing Company in 2007 doing marketing, events, and promotions. After many years of experience with Sweetwater, Carly joined a startup brewery with Smith in South Carolina as head of Marketing and Events in early 2011. As co-founder, Carly is the Marketing and Sales Director for the company.

Pratt Mathews
Production Operations Manager

After growing up in Statesboro, Pratt attended Valdosta State University where he studied Business Administration with a focus in Marketing. Having a passion for unique brews, Pratt had been waiting to step on board for some time. This guy can be found kayak fishing, duck hunting or just about anything involving the outdoors!

Natalie Alexander
Taproom & Event Manager

Natalie was raised in the heart of the country, Kansas City. She made her way to the South after falling in love with Savannah and received her BFA in Advertising Design at SCAD. By the love of beer, beach and music, she found her way into the home of Southbound. Plan your next event with her at Southbound or join her in the taproom for a beer, and keep your eyes peeled, she’s a tiny one.

Jeremy Hammons
Lead Brewer

Jeremy was born in Louisville, Kentucky, an area of the country more known for bourbon, horses, fried chicken, and baseball bats than beer.  It wasn’t until his move to Auburn, AL (War Eagle!) in 2005 that he really got to see what the southeast beer culture was really all about and immediately fell in love with the industry.  In 2009, he moved to Savannah with his wife, Cara Ann, and their 4 cats.  A budding home brewer, Jeremy joins the team at Southbound with more than 12 years of customer service in the musical instrument sales industry under his belt.  When he’s not doing tours at the brewery, you’ll usually find him enjoying a concert or playing drums for his band, The Train Wrecks.  As Jeremy always likes to point out, he is a beer geek, not a beer snob.

Alex Breard

Alex is originally from Baltimore, Maryland.  He graduated from Clemson University.  Which is obviously better than some technical schools in Georgia. While attending Clemson, Alex worked on the packaging line at Heavy Seas (formerly Clipper City).  Following graduation, Alex attended The Siebel Institute of Technology where he earned an International Diploma in Brewing Technology and where he met Smith.  After brewing in several Brewpubs, Alex headed back down South and got on board with Southbound Brewing Company.

Jason Fusco
Greater Atlanta Sales Representative

Jason’s long strange trip began in Tulsa, Oklahoma, but he grew up in the concert venues and sports stadiums of Atlanta.  Graduating from the University of Georgia, he spent as much time exploring the Georgia Theater and the beer culture of the Classic City as he did on campus.  After graduation, he followed his father’s footsteps into the beer industry.  If he was stranded on a desert island all he would need was beer, Grateful Dead concert bootlegs, and you could probably leave him right there.

Michael Spehar
Brand Ambassador - Asheville

Michael was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee before moving to Atlanta in 2006 when he first met Smith and Carly. Having grown up playing guitar and saxophone, he fell in love with craft beer as the perfect complement to his love for live music. Michael earned a degree in Philosophy from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga and is a true believer in Southbound's passion for bringing people together with ice cold brews and sizzling hot tunes.

Adam Hower
Brand Ambassador

Adam hails from Snellville, GA, where he originally pursued a fine arts degree but in 2012 he made the decision to leave the Atlanta area and make the move to Savannah where he currently attends Savannah State University and is working towards a degree in accounting. Adam comes from a large family of craft beer/spirits enthusiasts, and enjoys carrying on this tradition.

Alex Lowry
Brand Ambassador

Alex was born and raised in Elmore, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Toledo with a double major in History and Secondary Education and made the move to Savannah in 2010. He is a full time high school teacher here in Savannah and works part time for the brewery giving tours and serving wonderful craft beer. Alex has been home brewing and enjoying beer tastings with his friends for the last couple of years. Serving customers great craft beer, giving tours, and answering questions about Southbound and the craft beer industry is a fantastic job to have.

Kristian Stojek
Brand Ambassador

Kristian was born in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. After making a couple pit stops in Pennsylvania and Texas, he eventually made his way into Savannah where he received his degree in Graphic design and Printmaking from SCAD. After he graduated, he couldn't stand to leave so he decided to call Savannah home and open up a design studio right in the heart of downtown. When Kristian isn't at the brewery working on our chalkboard or serving Southbound beer, he is at home brewing his own batch. Or two.

Amanda Rankine
Brand Ambassador

Born and raised in Ohio, Amanda attended the University of Cincinnati where she met her husband, Jason, and earned a bachelor's degree in special education. She has been a resident of Savannah for 9 years and has worked in the craft beer/service industry for the last 4 years. When Amanda isn't at the brewery, she can be found at Dancing Dogs Yoga, out on her kayak, spending time with her dogs, or catching a live show. Wherever you find her, she'll gladly share a cold brew or two with you.

Brew Cat
Exterminator & Security

Brew Cat came to us from the local shelter and slowly crawled into our hearts. Although he's cute, he's clawed and dangerous.  He's got a job to do, so we don't recommend playing with him!

Loye Pyles
Cellerman & Lab Tech

Loye was born, raised and educated right here in Savannah, GA. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Biology at the now defunct Armstrong State University. After considering a career in healthcare, he decided to try teaching, after which he decided yeast was his true calling. When not peering in a microscope, he can be found spending time with his wife, Chelsea, and his furry lab assistant, Jada.

Andy Hurley
South Georgia Sales Representative

Andy was born & raised in the Greater Brew City area (Milwaukee, WI) and recently found his way down to Georgia with his new, small family to enjoy Savannah history, heat and happy life. He enjoys delicious coffee and Dick’s Picks, classic literature & beer picnics. If you’re looking to grab a cold one or two with this husband, father, brother and man still undefeated in Monopoly, bring him all the Berliner Weisse. Though more likely, he’ll bring you guys something from his fridge.

Maggie MacMillan
South Carolina Sales Representative

Maggie MacMillan is a Georgia native with over 13 years of experience in the hospitality & community health industry. She holds a Bachelors degree in Public Health Sciences with a minor in Epidemiology from Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, as well as accreditations such as Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Certified Beer Server by Cicerone, and recently completed Wine & Spirit Education Trust Level II. As a self proclaimed travel enthusiast, Maggie has visited 17 countries while working in Germany & Costa Rica. While living in Bavaria, she discovered her passion for the beer making process and the social well being that comes with local brewing culture. She settled in Charleston, SC in 2014 and worked in on premise beer & wine sales for Breakthru Beverage distributors. She stays busy by trying new beers, playing with her two dogs, learning the didgeridoo, seeing live music, and testing recipes for her boyfriend's food truck business.
